Coyotes are intelligent and adaptive animals that have expanded their range across North America over the last 200 years. Coyotes can survive and thrive in a wide variety of habitats—including our own backyards! The Portland Urban Coyote Project studies the coyotes that live in our urban environment with us to help maintain our healthy ecosystem.
To help us understand how coyotes interact with our urban environment, we ask for your help reporting any time you see or hear a coyote in our metropolitan area. These reports help us learn more about coyotes, and how humans and coyotes interact in urban environments. Who are we? We are a group of Portland State University and Oregon State University researchers working in collaboration with Portland Audubon. We collect and analyze the coyote sightings you report, and share and report on what we find. Who can participate? Anyone! We encourage community scientists of all ages. In fact, a class of second graders from Alameda Elementary School were the first community scientists to collect data for this project! How can I get more involved? Submitting your observations of coyotes is the most important part of this project! The involvement of the community is crucial to the development of our knowledge about coyotes in the city. Please tell your friends about the project and ask them to keep an eye out for coyotes in their neighborhood. |
